If you’re eager to refinish furniture, read on to discover the answers to the most common beginner questions.

Top Ten Furniture Refinishing Questions Answered

1. What Essential Tools and Products Do I need to Start Furniture Refinishing?

When starting your furniture refinishing journey, having the essential tools and products is crucial. These essential tools will not only make the process smoother but also ensure professional results. One of the first questions asked by aspiring furniture refinishers is about the essential tools for furniture refinishing and the materials required to begin.

Essential tools include sandpaper grits from 120 – 220, sanding blocks to protect the surface integrity, chemical paint stripper, wood filler, screwdrivers, putty knives, paint brushes, disposable rags, drop cloths, painter’s tape, and protective gear such as gloves and masks. Quality tools make the process smoother and safer, so invest in the best you can afford.

When you are ready to start refinishing, you will need to decide what you are doing with the piece and choose the proper products. You’ll need to choose the colour of stains and paints, the type of varnish (water or oil-based) that is compatible with the paint or stain (or decide if it’s necessary), or whether you plan to use drying oils or wax. Also consider the clean-up and what solvents the products you’ve chosen require. Oil-based products clean up with mineral spirits or paint thinner, while water-based products generally use soap and water.

By equipping yourself with the essential tools and products for furniture refinishing, you’ll be well-prepared to tackle any project with confidence.

The Introductory Course covers these topics under the modules: Selecting Paint and Stain, Choosing the Right Paintbrush, Tools, Supplies, & PPE, and Introduction to Protective Finishes. You can browse the Introductory course content, including the chapter headings, on the Overview page.

2. How Do I Identify the Wood Type Before Refinishing Furniture?

If you plan on staining the piece of furniture, understanding the wood type you’re working with is crucial. Is the piece solid wood, laminate, or neither? Hardwoods like oak, maple, and walnut react differently from softwoods such as pine or cedar when stained.

You can identify wood type by examining its grain pattern, colour, and weight. If in doubt, consult furniture refinishing forums or local experts. Knowing your material is key to achieving professional results.

The Intermediate course covers this topic under Furniture Materials & Identification, Wood 101, and Staining & Dyeing Wood. You can browse the Intermediate course content, including the chapter headings, on the Overview page.

3. How Should I Properly Strip Old Paint or Finish?

Properly stripping old paint or finish is a fundamental step. If you don’t properly strip old paint or finish from the furniture, you risk adhesion issues and damaging the furniture. Beginners often ask about the best method to strip old paint or finish properly: chemical paint stripper or manual sanding.

Paint stripping with chemical products can be effective and is always my first choice, but it’s crucial always to follow safety precautions.

Sanding can damage the wood or remove too much, the number one beginner refinisher mistake! While many people do sand off old finishes, stripping with sandpaper is best done by someone who understands sandpaper and its various grits, as well as when and when not to use an electric sander.

I’ve covered this topic in a my blog posts: How to Refinish Furniture Safely and How to Strip Furniture  , as well as in the Intermediate Course modules Sanding 101 and Stripping. The Intermediate Course is available after completing the Introductory Course, or it is included in the Skills Bundle and the All Access Bundle.

4. How do I Repair Furniture Damage?

Furniture refinishers need to know how to repair furniture damage. Most vintage or second-hand furniture has minor, easily repaired imperfections, such as dents, scratches, or chips. Fill small holes or deep scratches with wood filler, let it dry, then sand smooth. For loose joints or wobbly legs, use wood glue and clamps. Replace missing hardware and tighten screws. These basic furniture repairs are essential before you apply any new finish.

While it is easy to answer this question for minor furniture repairs, mastering the skills for larger damage takes practice. I have covered furniture repairs in the Advanced Course module Furniture Repairs. You can browse the Advanced course content, including the chapter headings, on the Overview page. The Advanced Course is available after completing the Introductory and Intermediate Courses, or can be accessed via the Skills or All-Access bundles. 5. How Do I Choose the Right Stain or Paint and Finish?

Choosing the right stain or paint is a top concern. Deciding whether to stain or paint, and then choosing the best type of stain or paint, can be challenging. It is essential to understand the properties of the products and identify which ones you wish to achieve.

Consider the furniture’s intended use and the style you want to achieve. Additionally, it is essential to know what protective finish works best for the product you choose. Most stains and some paints require you to apply a finish over them.

Oil-based stains penetrate deeper and highlight wood grain, while water-based products are easier to clean and less toxic. Consider using dyes for a cleaner, more striking colour. Chalk paint has become popular for its durable finish and ease of use. There are many other types of paint as well, including durable enamels and lacquers. Most paints require choosing the right primer for the substrate and paint base.

Samples and test boards are your best friends—always try your chosen product combination on a test board first. If there is a spot to text the products in a hidden area, this helps determine how the wood and products will react.

The Introductory Course module Selecting Paint & Stain introduces this topic, along with the module Introduction to Protective Finishes. The Intermediate module Staining & Dyeing Wood provides further explanation, and the Advanced Course comprises two modules: Advanced Protective Finishes and Decorative Finishes, which cover advanced methods for finishing your project. These three courses are found in the Skills and the All Access bundles.

6. What Are the Best Practices for Sanding?

Some projects require sanding, even if you aren’t removing a finish. When working with newly manufactured pieces, you will need to sand them to ensure the finish goes on evenly. If you did strip off an old finish, whether chemically or mechanically, you will likely need to do a final sand to prep the piece.

Sanding is an essential step that beginners often overlook or rush. Always sand with the grain to avoid scratches. Start with a coarser grit (no coarser than 120 – never use 80 on furniture) to remove any remaining old finish and rough spots, then progress to finer grit for smoothness. Clean the surface thoroughly between grit changes to avoid residue. Proper sanding prepares the furniture for a flawless finish.

See the Intermediate course module Sanding 101 for an in-depth look at this critical skill.

7. How Can I Apply Finishes Professionally?

Applying finishes professionally can be daunting. There are several types of finishes, such as varnish, polyurethane, drying oils, or wax. When applying wet finishes such as varnish or polyurethane, use high-quality brushes or foam applicators, and apply thin, even coats. Allow each layer to dry completely before lightly sanding with a high-grit (over 320) wet/dry sandpaper, cleaning sanding grit off thoroughly, and adding the next coat. Patience is key to applying a durable and streak-free professional finish.

Some use specialty foam rollers or wipe on varnishes, depending on their preference and the product. Spraying is the best way to apply finishes professionally to furniture, but it takes time to perfect this skill. Drying oils are applied and then wiped back with a clean, lint-free rag, allowing the oils to dry completely between coats. Waxes require application and buffing with a clean, soft cloth.

I cover how to apply protective finishes in the Introductory course’s module, Introduction to Protective Finishes, and again in the Advanced course’s modules, Advanced Protective Finishes and Paint Sprayers.

8. How Do I Protect Refinished Furniture?

After investing time and effort into restoring a piece of furniture, how can you properly protect refinished furniture? It is also essential that you pass along this information to your clients so they protect your hard work.

Protect refinished furniture pieces by placing them away from direct sunlight and humidity. Use coasters and pads under hot or wet items. Cleaning is as simple as a soft, slightly damp cloth. A small dab of dish soap is often not needed, as it’s usually not necessary if you are already protecting the refinished furniture. These simple steps ensure your furniture stays beautiful for years.

9. What Common Beginner Mistakes Should I Avoid?

Novices often make common beginner mistakes, such as skipping sanding when needed, sanding when it isn’t, using cheap brushes, applying too thick a coat of paint or finish, not allowing enough drying time, choosing the wrong product for the job, and failing to prep the piece properly.

Avoid shortcuts—take your time with each step. Research and read tutorials before starting. Invest in quality products and tools for lasting results.

See my blog post on the Top 8 Beginner Furniture Flipping Mistakes. The Furniture Flipping 101’s skills courses, Introductory, Intermediate, and Advanced, will guide you through the most significant hurdles when learning to refinish furniture and help you avoid these mistakes.

Furniture refinishers often seek further education and clarification to understand the rationale behind the techniques and products. After you learn the basics, there are new skills to master. While there are many free online sources, including my blog posts, these often cover one or two topics and don’t always give you the whole picture.
